Your urban boutique hotel with many facets

The story of the estate traces back to 1923, when the former "Albergo Stella" welcomed its first guests, ushering in an era of hospitality. Swiftly, the hotel gained renown for its warmth, captivating charm, and the culinary expertise of its original proprietor. Beyond lodging, the establishment also extended its bathing facilities to the local community for a fee, distinguishing itself as one of the few with such amenities.

Through the passing decades, the Albergo Stella saw numerous generations of hoteliers and their families, who not only managed the premises but also embraced it as their home. Over time, it evolved into a cherished meeting point for travellers worldwide.

In 2012, Alexandra and Daniel Hahne assumed ownership of this historic hotel, faithfully carrying on its legacy. However, the challenges posed by the pandemic demanded a fresh approach. Viewing these circumstances as an opportunity, they aspired to create something novel and perhaps even ground-breaking: a hotel that would transition the historical property into a new era with contemporary design, making it a special place for modern travellers.

Boldness in innovation and forward-thinking now heralds a new chapter: The B5 Boutique Hotel.

Magic tricks at the Albergo Stella

Hotelier Daniel tells us that in the former Albergo Stella there was only one communal bathroom with a bathtub. In times when there were few guests, even the neighbours came to use the bathtub for a small fee. In the beginning, three meals were served daily, i.e. full board.

The owner performed magic tricks for the hotel guests in the evenings after dinner. His son ran up and down the platforms of the station wearing a large hat with the words “Hotel Stella” on it when the trains arrived to attract guests.

The magic number 5

Binario 5, the 5th track, means that you’ll find us right next to the train station in Lugano.

Just a few metres after the station, you’ll see the green façade of our boutique hotel.

The number 5 inspires us in every way. The hand has five fingers, we have five senses and our house number is five. There are five rooms on each hotel floor and the B5 Boutique Hotel has five floors.

Who was Francesco Borromini?

You’ve probably already noticed that our boutique hotel is located at Via Francesco Borromini 5.

Francesco Borromini (1599-1667), who was born in Ticino and emigrated to Milan at the age of 16, was an Italian Baroque architect whose creative masterpieces shaped the cityscape of Rome. His unique buildings are characterised by innovative forms, playful lines and a harmonious balance. Borromini played a decisive role in the development of Roman architecture in the 17th century.
